Wigs either have a wefted foundation or a net/mesh/lace foundation. Wefted foundations consist of a cap made out of ‘wefts’ or rows of hair, and are machine-made. As they are machine made, and mass manufactured they are usually the cheaper option and will come in a huge range of styles.

Net/mesh or lace foundations consist of a cap made out of mesh into which hair is knotted by hand and therefore generally more expensive. The one huge benefit to a hand knotted foundation is that when the hair moves or separates (especially on windy days) you do not see the wefts or rows of hair as you would with a wefted foundation.

Combination. As you would expect, some manufacturers have combined the best of both of the above options. Take a look at the Sentoo range of wigs, these combine a monofilament parting and crown, a hand knotted part and machine wefted section. Especially good for people who have hairloss and need a more snug and realistic fit.
